The Structure Within is a creative partnership to develop a shared language to address internalised oppression.

The project, conceived by Professor Mónica Moreno Figueroa (Sociology, University of Cambridge), draws from her academic research into the logics of racism and anti-racism in México and Latin America – how it is lived and felt – and over a decade of anti-racist activism as co-founder of the COPERA collective.

The primary aim of the project has been to understand the underlying logics behind the difficulties of collaboration for social change. A central argument is that internalized oppression insidiously undermines agendas for social transformation from within.

A key focus has been finding effective ways to communicate this uncomfortable proposition to individuals and groups engaged in social transformation and organizational processes. The project seeks to support them in adopting this perspective and integrating it into their work.
